Reverse-Engineering a Genius

Interesting article in Vanity Faire that is an analysis of one way Vermeer obtained his extraordinary realism. There has been speculation for years that he used some sort of camera obscura, and it is known that many painters used various lens and projection systems to obtain imagery, but the actual “how” has never been completely answered. This inventor’s posited answer is wonderful; what’s even better is the level of rigor and complexity and, yes, sense of play, he brings to the inquiry of art making. I love it! What do you think? A lot of people think that using these tools to obtain an image is “cheating” and I strongly disagree, but what do you think? Also, for those of you who’ve never checked out Vermeer: good stuff, right? I love these. Enjoy the article! Vermeer’s Secret Tool
